Grace McCalla | Artist Spotlight

“I am a visual enthusiast. I love art and implementing new ideas into stories, scenes and other peoples thoughts, I started drawing and painting from a very young age and I have never stopped. What fascinates me is the fantasy characters and atmospheres based around macabre and the unknown. I am an aspiring artist that integrates ideas and imagination to create something real and visually and physically entertaining”

How do you describe your work?

All of my work is based around human consumption, its's playful and colorful, yet has dark expressions in the symbolism. Most of my works seem crude but the colors I use counteract the subject matter.

What’s your preferred medium to express yourself and you work? How did you come into working that way?

I illustrate the characters but I also painter larger pieces in which i use acrylic oil and spray paint. Growing up i used to draw and paint very detailed art pieces, but later in my life I began characters in a 'line fashion' with less detail and more humor.

Where did you grow up and do you think that’s affected, at all, your vision as an artist?

Although I am a Londoner, some of my concepts are influenced by backdrops of the USA - in particular, the art deco era and colors from Miami. My character subject matter tends to portray the dark side of "having a great time" and the darker side of world current affairs.

What triggers your imagination?

My imagination consists of where I want to be in life and what I feel at that moment, with symbolism that derives from the renaissance and Flemish religious paintings. I dig deep into whatever diversion fascinates me.

What are some instagram accounts or artists that you particularly enjoy / are inspired from?

My favorite Insta artist is Joan Cornella, he has amazing humor in his illustrations and the talent of a renaissance artist Luca Signorelli who has painted religious Fresco paintings

What was your dream growing up as a child?

My dram growing up as a child was to live in America and it still is the glamorous side of Miami and LA that influences my life and some of what I create.

What has become most important to you or your work at this moment in your life?

To show the lighter side of human consumption in a dark and tedious but beautiful world. My work is very childlike which I feel can brighten people's creativity and even someone's day.

Is there any specific moment(s) or memory in your life that pushed you definitively towards the arts or to pursue your creative ambitions?

It' wasn't so much a specific moment, I really think I was put on this earth to create weird things and show people a difference side to life. Since I was young, I have always had a weird streak and there isn't really anything else I'd rather be doing and showing to people.

What does your work mean to you? If anything at all?

It lets me create an ideal world in my eyes. My work is very much like adult cartoons and it relates to everyone's inner child - that's what matters to me.

What is your definition of ‘art’, even if it’s total bullshit?

Art is the only thing that lets you see the past and into the future. There is actually nothing else in life that let's you do that....unless you have a time machine.
